Essay Award Program Objectives
The aims of the Student Essay Awards in Magnetics are to:
1.
Financial and Non-Financial Awards
Awards will be granted as following for the student essay
program:

Top Award
– US$
1,250
-
Second
Award –
US$
1,000
-
Third Award
– US$ 500
Each
of the top three essayists will also receive a one-year
license of Profile Analyst –
Encom’s expert
geophysical analysis tool for potential field and other data.
2.
Qualifications
The
awards are for students, including graduate students, attending an
institute of higher education (university, college or technical school)
as of October 1, 2003.
3. Topic of Essay
Selection of essay topics is at the discretion of students; however,
students may wish to consider one of the following areas of
investigation:

4. Essay Award
Requirements
To
qualify for an award, students are required to:

Prepare a short
essay (800 to 1200 words) on a clearly defined topic in
Magnetics with
representative illustrations
as desired
-
Submit the essay
in English with the “Application Information” described below
-
Use
the style guidelines from seg.org/publications/geophysics/manuscript.shtml
-
Include a list of
essay references with at least one reference from a web-based source
-
Submit their essay
and application by email no later than
Friday, October 21, 2005

Provide a photocopy
of a valid student registration card from an accredited university or
college (due on notification that the student has been deemed eligible
for an award)

6. Announcement of
Awards 
The judges decisions will be announced in November 2005. Award
recipients will be notified by email. An announcement will also be posted
on the sponsoring companies’ websites.

Judges
Entries
will be judged by an independent group of reviewers, comprising well
known, international experts in the fields of magnetics and potential
field methods, including:

Criteria 
Essays
will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:

Overall impression and comprehensiveness
of essays

Technical accuracy
-
Writing and adherence to publishing standards
Please
note that all judges’ decisions are final.
9. Publication of
Essays
The
following conditions relate to publication of essays and related
materials:
- All
entrants agree that the copyright to each essay will be attributable
to the conference sponsors and that their submissions can be published
on sponsoring companies’ websites or their other external
communication media with due acknowledgement to the author and without
monetary or other compensation

Award recipients agree to provide a photograph of themselves for
publication with their essays
10. Other

Essays based on
graduation theses are acceptable

An essay that has
been contributed to any other awards program is not acceptable

Once submitted,
essays will not be returned to the applicant
